CSLB Exam Waiver:
Simplify Your Path to Licensing
Exam waiver applications turn on documentation. Contractors License Experts has handled CSLB waiver applications since 2007 and maintains a 98% success rate where clients supply the records the Board requires.
A CSLB exam waiver removes the requirement to sit the Law and Business and trade examinations. Waivers are granted under Business and Professions Code sections 7065.1 and 7065.3, most commonly for immediate family members continuing a business and for contractors adding a closely related classification. Applications turn on documentation, which is the most common reason they are rejected.
What is a CSLB Exam Waiver?
A CSLB exam waiver allows eligible applicants to bypass the standard contractor licensing exams in California under specific conditions. Whether you're a family member, an officer of a company, or an experienced employee, this opportunity can save you time and simplify your licensing process. At Contractors License Experts, we specialize in helping you determine your eligibility and ensuring your application is accurate and complete.
Who Can Qualify for a CSLB Exam Waiver?
You may qualify for a CSLB exam waiver if you meet certain criteria outlined in the Business and Professions Code §7065.1. Here’s a breakdown of the most common scenarios:
Immediate Family Member
If a sole proprietor retires, falls ill, or passes away, an immediate family member who has worked in the family business for at least 5 of the past 7 years may qualify for an exam waiver.
Corporation or LLC Officer, Member, or Manager
A listed officer, manager, or member actively involved in business operations for 5 of the past 7 years may replace a retiring or departing qualifying individual without exams.
Key Employee
A key employee with 5 years of experience in the business may qualify for an exam waiver, allowing them to take over responsibilities or apply for a new license to establish a separate division.
General Partner
General partners listed on a license for 5 of the past 7 years can apply for a separate license without taking exams.
Additional Classifications
Under B&P Code §7065.3, licensed contractors who want to add a new C classification can qualify for an exam waiver if they meet all of the following conditions:
1) The applicant has been the qualifying individual on an active license for the last five (5) years.
2) The applicant has at least four (4) years of experience in the additional classification being applied for.
3) The additional classification is determined by the Contractors Board as a significant component of the existing classification in which the applicant is licensed.

FAQs
-
You need evidence of your role in the business over the qualifying period, not just a statement of it. That usually means payroll records, W-2s, pay stubs, tax returns and, where the business is a corporation or LLC, proof that you were listed on the license and in what capacity. For a family waiver you also need proof of the relationship and evidence that the licensee's own license was active and in good standing throughout. Thin or inconsistent documentation is the most common reason waiver applications are rejected.
-
Usually about 6 weeks depending on the processing times. CSLB publishes current processing times on its website, and those change with workload, but a waiver application that comes back for more information restarts a lot of that clock. The single biggest factor is whether the documentation is complete and consistent on first submission. That is what we get right before anything is filed.
-
Often not. Under Business and Professions Code section 7065, no examination is required if within the previous five years you personally passed the written examination in the classification you are applying for, or served as the qualifying individual for a license that was in good standing in that same classification. That is an entitlement rather than a discretionary waiver, so it is a cleaner route where it applies. Check this before assuming you need a waiver at all.
-
Yes! The exam waivers noted under Business and Professions Code §7065.1 will waive both the Law and trade exams.
-
Possibly, under Business and Professions Code section 7065.3. The applicant needs to have been a qualifying individual on an active license for the last five (5) years, has at least four years of experience within the last ten as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee or contractor in the classification being added, and the classification being applied for has to be one the CSLBconsiders closely related to what you already hold, or a significant component of the business of a licensed general engineering or general building contractor. It does not apply if you are licensed solely in limited specialty classifications.
