CSLB License Renewal Fees: Current Schedule and How to Avoid the Late Charge
CSLB renewal fees depend on three things: your entity type, whether you are renewing active or inactive, and whether the renewal arrives before your expiration date. Here is the current schedule and the traps that cost contractors money.
Current renewal fees
Sole owner:
Active, on time: $450
Active, delinquent: $675
Inactive, on time: $300
Inactive, delinquent: $450
Non-sole owner (corporation, partnership, joint venture or LLC):
Active, on time: $700
Active, delinquent: $1,050
Inactive, on time: $500
Inactive, delinquent: $750
C-10 Electrical licensees add $20 to each of the above. That surcharge funds the CSLB's enforcement of electrician certification requirements.
Why entity type matters
Until 2022 there was a single renewal fee regardless of how the licence was held. SB 607 split the schedule by entity type, and the gap is significant. A corporation now pays $700 to renew where a sole owner pays $450.
If you are weighing up incorporating, the renewal fee is a small part of that decision, but it is worth knowing it is there.
The late fee is 50 percent
A delinquent renewal costs half as much again. That is $225 extra for a sole owner and $350 for a non-sole owner, and it applies from the day after your expiration date.
An acceptable renewal application has to reach CSLB headquarters before the expiration date. Not be postmarked by it, be received by it. Mail renewals can take two to four weeks to process, so posting it the week before is cutting it close.
The 90 day safety net
Since 2021, under SB 1474, the registrar is required to retroactively reinstate an expired license if a completed renewal with the correct fees arrives within 90 days of expiration. That closes the gap in your license history, but the delinquent fee still applies.
Beyond 90 days you can still renew delinquently for up to five years. After five years the license goes void and you start over with a full application, including the exams.
Paying online
If your license has a single qualifier you can renew online and the record updates immediately. The CSLB accepts Visa and Mastercard only, and adds a 2.99 percent processing fee which appears as a separate charge. Paying by check through the mail avoids that.
Licenses with multiple qualifiers cannot renew or pay online at all. The form and payment go together by mail or in person.
The renewal form is sent once
The CSLB mails your renewal application to the address on record roughly 60 days before expiration, and it sends it once.
If you have moved and not updated your address, it will not reach you, and not receiving it is not a defense. If nothing has arrived within 45 days of your expiration date, order a duplicate rather than waiting. Responsibility for renewing on time sits with you either way.
Working on an expired license is treated as unlicensed contracting, with everything that carries.
